Riding business waves

How strategic planning sets you up for success

Driving along the breathtaking Highway 1 in California a few years ago, I was captivated by surfers skillfully riding the waves. I saw them again in Helsingborg, Sweden, last summer and in San Diego this January. Each time, I couldn’t help but see the striking similarities between surfing and running a business. Both surfers and entrepreneurs share a blend of strategy, patience, skill, a courageous mindset, and community spirit.

Watching surfers patiently sit on their boards, chatting and waiting for the perfect wave, made me think about the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people and engaging in strategic planning. Just like surfing, achieving business success demands strategy, skill, timing, patience, and a strong community. This post dives into these parallels and underscores why strategic planning is vital for any business aiming to level up.

Be present to seize opportunities

Surfers must be present to catch the wave, just as you must be actively engaged in your business environment to seize opportunities. This means identifying the best social media channels, attending key industry events, speaking to the right audiences, and choosing optimal locations for your business.

Being in the right place where your ideal clients are, at the right time for them, is crucial to catching the wave of success. If you’re not present and ready, you’ll miss the wave. Similarly, if you don't strategically position yourself where opportunities are likely to arise, your business might miss significant growth chances.

This realization inspired me to share how the principles of surfing can be applied to business strategy, especially for service-based entrepreneurs seeking actionable tips to simplify their operations.

Strategy

Before hitting the water, surfers check their equipment, study the weather, and prepare mentally and physically. Business success similarly requires thorough preparation and strategic planning.

Here are some actionable tips:

  • Business Planning: Think of planning your business as crafting a roadmap to success. Use the Business Heroes® Grid to align your activities with customer needs, making the process fun, rewarding, and customer-focused.
  • Goal Setting: Use SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) to keep your team focused.
  • Team Readiness: Ensure your team is mentally and physically prepared by promoting wellness initiatives, offering mindfulness training, and conducting team-building activities. A well-prepared team is more motivated, resilient, and ready to tackle new processes with enthusiasm.

Skills

Surfers spend countless hours honing their skills to ride the wave with precision. In business, developing the right skills is essential.

Here are some actionable tips:

  • Continuous Learning: Foster a culture of continuous learning by encouraging your team to participate in workshops, webinars, and online courses to stay ahead of industry trends and innovations.
  • Optimize Operations: Use a business automation tool like Keap to streamline your workflows and always have your SOPs (standard operating procedures) available and up-to-date. This ensures efficiency and consistency across your operations.
  • Team Alignment: Ensure everyone knows their crucial part in the business. Clearly define roles and responsibilities, and foster open communication so that each team member understands how their contributions align with the overall goals of the company.

Timing

In surfing, catching the right wave at the right time is crucial. Similarly, timing in business can make or break your success.

Here are some actionable tips:

  • Time Management: Schedule your business year with important milestones, campaigns, and other key activities so everyone knows how to plan their day, week, month, quarter, and year in detail. This keeps the organization in a healthy, productive state.
  • Agility: Use tools like Google Trends, social media analytics, and customer feedback to stay ahead of industry trends and monitor your business's health. This helps you determine if and when you need to adapt anything in your business, whether big or small.
  • Opportunity Tracking: Implement a system to track and evaluate opportunities as they arise. This could be a CRM or a project management tool where potential opportunities are logged and assessed regularly, ensuring you can act swiftly and effectively when the right moment comes.

Patience

Waiting for the right wave requires patience. Surfers may sit in the water for hours, waiting for that one perfect moment. In business, patience and a determined mindset are equally important.

Here are some actionable tips:

  • Long-term Vision: Maintain a long-term vision and avoid being discouraged by short-term setbacks. Remember that building a successful business is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep your eyes on the bigger picture and celebrate small wins along the way.
  • Consistent Efforts: Sustain consistent efforts in marketing and customer engagement. Just like a surfer paddling continuously to stay in position, your persistent efforts will keep you ready to seize opportunities when they arise. Regular, meaningful interactions with your audience build trust and loyalty over time.
  • Resilience: Develop resilience by learning from failures and adapting your strategies. Every setback is a learning opportunity. Use these experiences to refine your approach and strengthen your business. Think of each failure as a wave that teaches you how to ride the next one better.

Community

Surfers often surf in groups, offering tips, encouragement, and support to each other. Similarly, having a strong business community can provide invaluable support.

Here are some actionable tips:

  • Networking: Join professional groups and attend industry events to build your network. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who can offer advice, share experiences, and open doors to new opportunities. I am a member of several networks, both formal and informal, like BNI Let's Unite in Stockholm which meets virtually every week, and Kvinnor & Företag, which I am the president of in Lidingö.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with other businesses to create win-win opportunities. Whether through joint ventures, partnerships, or referral programs, working together can amplify your reach and impact. I recently joined the virtual CoConnector, and I am really happy that I found it!
  • Mentorship: Seek mentors who can provide guidance and support. A mentor’s experience and insights can help you navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and accelerate your growth. I have always had several mentors, not only in business, whom I have leaned on to get advice and insights. Invaluable, for sure!
